Innovation does not begin with disruption. It begins with perspective. It asks us to re-examine what we think we know, remain open to alternative paths, and create space for collaboration across disciplines, industries, and lived experiences. True innovation happens when ideas are not only imagined – but supported, challenged, and brought to life by community.

That is why place matters. And few places do it better than Maryland.

Having lived in multiple states and observed how regions approach innovation, I have seen many models succeed. But none have matched Maryland’s combination of intellectual firepower, collaborative spirit, and willingness to invest collectively in the future. Here, innovation is not siloed. It is shared.

At the center of the state, Prince George’s County is home to the headquarters of IonQ, a global leader in quantum computing. Built on more than three decades of academic research and breakthroughs, IonQ’s roots trace directly to University of Maryland, College Park. Backed by over $1 billion in quantum investment in the past five years, Maryland has positioned itself at the forefront of a technology that will redefine national security, global competitiveness, and scientific discovery.

Head west to Frederick County and you find a dense concentration of life sciences innovation – from advanced medical devices to stem cell research and biomanufacturing. Companies like RoosterBio, Inc. have leveraged TEDCO’s Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund to scale their workforce and impact, generating more than $80 million in revenue and sustaining strong annual growth. That growth doesn’t stop at company walls – it fuels regional prosperity.

In Southern Maryland, the Southern Maryland Autonomous Research and Technology (SMART) Building stands as a living bridge between research and real-world application. With advanced AI, underwater, and land-based testing capabilities – and direct proximity to the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division – the next generation of engineers is learning not just how to innovate, but why it matters.

At TEDCO, our role is to connect these dots—to ensure entrepreneurs have access, capital, and visibility, while fostering collaboration that accelerates ideas to market. That mission reflects the most important lesson I’ve learned throughout my career: growth follows authenticity, and success is built through community.

Maryland proves this every day. One Maryland. One love.
