WHY INNOVATION STARTS WITH PEOPLE, NOT PRESSURE

For most of my career, I’ve worked at the intersection of technology, business, and culture. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the past few decades, it’s this: real innovation doesn’t start with tools, processes, or pressure. It starts with people.

Since the mid-1990s, I’ve had the privilege of working with entrepreneurs, executives, technologists, and creatives who are shaping what comes next. Technology keeps evolving faster, but the human challenges remain remarkably consistent. We want to create, to belong, to make progress that actually matters.

What I’ve tried to do throughout my work is connect dots—between disciplines, industries, and individuals—and help create environments where ideas can turn into action.

Connecting Ideas to Action

I’ve never believed that innovation lives in a single department or framework. It happens when different perspectives meet and when people feel safe enough to explore new possibilities together.

My role has often been that of a catalyst: bringing people together, translating complexity into something tangible, and helping organizations move from intention to execution without losing their humanity along the way. That philosophy has shaped everything I’ve been involved in.

Epicenter: A Human Platform for Progress

One expression of this thinking is Epicenter in Stockholm, which I helped ignite. Epicenter is sometimes described as a workspace, but for me it has always been something else—a platform for learning, collaboration, and real outcomes.

By bringing startups, global companies, and experts together in a carefully designed environment, Epicenter helps organizations accelerate innovation and growth in practical ways. The focus isn’t on hype, but on results—and on how people actually work best together. Epicenter reflects a belief I hold deeply: innovation thrives when people feel connected, trusted, and engaged.

Happy Business: A Radical Reframe

In recent years, these ideas have come together in what I call “Happy Business – The Secret Path to Innovation.”

We often treat happiness as something that follows success. I believe it’s the other way around. When people feel safe, inspired, and connected, creativity increases. Collaboration improves. Risk-taking becomes healthier. Happiness isn’t a fluffy bonus. It’s emotional infrastructure. It’s what allows innovation to happen naturally rather than being forced.

From Innovation to Hope

A crucial part of Happy Business is hope. I see many organizations with incredible tools and talent, yet struggling because people are tired, disengaged, or overwhelmed.

Innovation doesn’t stall because of a lack of technology—it stalls when people lose belief. When people feel their work matters and see a future worth building, energy returns. Momentum follows. Hope, in that sense, becomes a strategic asset.

SIME: Happy Business in Action

This philosophy has been taking shape for decades through SIME, the conference we started back in 1996. Every year, SIME brings together world-leading speakers, founders, executives, and creatives to explore the frontiers of technology, business, and humanity.

SIME has never been about trends for their own sake. It’s about perspective, curiosity, and connection—and about turning digital opportunity into real businesses, meaningful relationships, and positive impact. Seen through today’s lens, SIME is a living expression of Happy Business.

A Human Future of Innovation

Across everything I do, the philosophy is the same: innovation is a cultural process, not a technical one.

In a world full of powerful technology, our greatest advantage remains deeply human. If we want a future that works, we have to build organizations where people can thrive—not just perform. That’s where innovation really begins.
