When I started college in 2005 at Indiana University, if you would have told me I’d be opening the first black owned dental practice in the North Gulch in Nashville by 2025, I would have been totally shocked. I would be trying to figure out how a musician studying classical guitar at one of the foremost music schools in the world could have accomplished such a daunting task. The first word that comes to mind is innovation. During my musical studies I learned about composers from Bach to Beethoven, and even ones you wouldn’t know about like Joaquin Rodrigo or Astor Piazzola. This taught me a lot about culture, history, and the importance of bringing all of those elements together to create a powerful performance. For many years, I spent hours in the practice room, dedicated to expanding my knowledge and improving my craft. With each year that passed, I learned more repertoire and gained an appreciation for spreading love and healing through my music. I had the opportunity to premier works, win awards, and perform on both the east and west coast but still something was missing. My heart still wanted to help people. I wanted to find a way to be impactful more than what my music career was allowing me to do. That is where I discovered my passion with dentistry. There are many transferable skills I have as a musician that blend perfectly with dentistry. Problem solving: Breaking down complex issues into smaller digestible steps, coordination, dexterity, and artistry. Each musician and dentist puts their own touch on a piece or how they operate. That is what makes us unique.
