Nearly a century ago, an ice plant, sponge fishing boat, and 35 hard-working mules formed the foundation of what is today a global energy leader. Fast forward to today, and that humble beginning has paved the way for a groundbreaking innovation hub: 35 Mules. This energetic initiative, backed by NextEra Energy and its subsidiary, Florida Power & Light Company, is not just another incubator; it’s a launchpad for the next generation of revolutionary startup companies.

Launched in February of 2020, 35 Mules is a 15-month, founder-based program agnostic to company stage and industry, helping to grow and scale the next generation of game-changing startup companies. Startups in the 35 Mules program receive access to tailored programming, which includes entrepreneurial and leadership coaching, grant workshops, and pitch and storytelling trainings. The startup companies also advance their industry knowledge and gain exposure to new ways of thinking from Fortune 500 subject matter experts in our corporate headquarters in Juno Beach, Florida.

So what attracts startups to the Sunshine State? Founders, service providers, accelerators/incubators, and venture capital firms are working together to showcase the value that investing in the entrepreneurial ecosystem has for the state. Florida continues to enjoy its longstanding reputation as a top environment for business, and for good reason. Ranked the No. 1 Business Tax Climate in the Southeast (Tax Foundation) and No. 5 Business State in the U.S. (CNBC), Florida offers a welcoming business climate, highly competitive rates and incentives, and unparalleled opportunities for economic development.

The startup companies in the 35 Mules program are advancing their technologies within a range of industries. The first class of innovators – known as the Original Six – featured six startups and 14 entrepreneurs who worked in power generation and distribution, decarbonization, and more. The second class of seven startup companies were welcomed into the program in March of 2022 and focused on vegetation management, maritime, medical devices, and more. After a significant increase in applications, 35 Mules selected their third and current cohort in October of 2023, including companies in green hydrogen, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.

“The 35 Mules program is an excellent opportunity to develop innovative, technology-driven products and services in the state of Florida and help scale startup companies for maximum success. These efforts also contribute greatly to the state’s economic development,” said Cathy Chambers, Senior Director of Economic Development for Florida Power & Light Company.
