Cars Are Driven By People , The Guiding Principle Behind Everything We Make At Volvo, Therefore, Is And Must Remain, Safety

With this quote, Assar Gabrielsson & Gustav Larson, Volvo’s founders, set the tone for creating a unique concept in the industry.

Traditionally associated with innovation in the security field, the Swedish Brand was founded in 1927 in reply to a gap in the market. The lack of a car that was sufficiently safe, robust and prepared for the rugged climate and the harsh Scandinavian winters. The high accident rate on Swedish roads in the 1920s worried Assar and Gustav. For them, cars should be a symbol of joy, progress and freedom, never a reason for suffering and pain.

The brand’s positioning and values remained unchanged over more than nine decades – people, security, life and respect for the planet.

Volvo is a world leader regarding safety. But what is the point in saving peoples’ lives if the planet where they live is in danger? Bearing this in mind, Volvo announced in 2021 that “Sustainability” should be as important as “Safety”, therefore making a total commitment to electrification.

The launch of INNOVATE™ Oeiras vol.1 coincides with a historic moment for Volvo in Portugal.

We are launching our first Purely Electric Volvo – The XC40 Recharge.
In Portugal, we embody the brand’s environmental commitment. We were one of the first Volvo offices to remove all single-use plastic objects. We have brought together employees, partners and journalists for a beach cleaning activity, using some of the waste collected to create a wave made of oceanic plastic waste, as a symbol of Volvo’s commitment to environmental sustainability. This wave has been travelling from one end of the country to the other, generating strong interest, particularly among the school community.

We were pioneers in the installation of a pollution fighting billboard. This installation (in Porto), was able to activate a photo-catalysis process that disintegrated up to 85% of polluting elements in the atmosphere that contribute to the greenhouse effect such as: nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide and volatile organic compounds.

The reduction in pollution achieved during the three months it was on display was equivalent to that obtained from approximately 230 trees. Last year, we implemented a change of engines in our car fleet, which allowed us to save 10 thousand litres of fuel and prevent 24 tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.

The arrival of the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric is just the kick-off of our total electrification strategy. We aim to become a climate neutral company by 2040.

We are aware, as representatives of the automotive industry, that we are part of the problem. We want to be part of the solution.
